A plucky teenager by the name of Sonny Dickson has leaked what looks like the technical plans for the new iPhone 8, and there’s sweeping changes in store.
Dickson, who has a habit of leaking Apple product gossip thanks to “Chinese sources”, posted the schematic of the new smartphone on Twitter late last night.
If the diagram is to be believed, experts say it heralds “a shift in design” where Apple has moved the fingerprint touchpad to the rear of the phone, as well as including dual vertical cameras.
There’s also speculation that Apple will do away with the volume buttons, instead preferring some kind of on-screen touchpad for users to control sound loudness.
Sadly, it looks like the headphone jack – a much debated omission from the iPhone 7 – is long dead and buried.
“Dual vertical cameras are here, Touch ID sensor on the back. Definitely a shift in design,” Dickson wrote on Twitter.
“It’s hard to tell, but volume rockets seem to be omitted as well.”
The leaked plans did little to soothe the battalion of tech geeks picking apart every last detail of the image.
“Looks like volume is there to me, two pairs of circle affordances. Looks to my eye like a USB-C port,” wrote one user.
“It’s never going to be USB-C, they make so much money by licensing lightning,” wrote another.
So just how much can you rely on the accuracy of a grainy blueprint posted on Twitter? If Dickson’s last leaks are anything to go by, you could almost bet your house on it.
Speaking to The Monthly, Dickson – who refuses to state his age outside of being a “teenager” – revealed that he keeps in regular touch with five to ten different people in China who buy prototype parts from rumoured Apple manufacturers and then send him the photos.
In August 2013, he caused a worldwide stir when he was the first to leak the details of the iPhone 5, including the all-new fingerprint scanner, a never-before-seen feature at the time.
The new iPhone 8 was slated to launch in September this year, but many experts believe that we’ll have to wait many more months than that due to manufacturing problems of OLED screens rumoured to feature in the phone.
